About our Unit
Our Older People’s Medicine (OPM) and stroke services are carried out through a multi-disciplinary team approach that strives to ensure that patients are cared for holistically. Alongside our inpatient wards, we also run the UK’s first Older People’s Emergency Department.
The department is one of the largest in the Trust in terms of patient numbers, with around 180 inpatients under the OPM team’s care at any one time. OPM also have input to the care of patients in community hospitals and within other departments at the Trust.
Brundall Ward
Brundall Ward is a 38 bed ward specialising in the medical care of hip fractures. We also care for Older Person’s medicine in-patients with a complex variety of co-morbidities. We have a dedicated nursing/MDT team including specialist physiotherapists and a specialist nurse for neck of femur fractures who educates patients post-op.
Our three consultants have further interests in OPED, surgical liaison and Parkinson’s disease and we receive daily input from the Orthopaedic team. We are active in research with various trials taking place on the ward. Recently we have been nominated for NNUH’s Ward of the Year

Who we work with
We work with colleagues in Emergency Care when needed, and are also involved with the Early Integrated Discharge Team (EIT). In addition, we offer a range of outpatient services, such as the Rapid Access Clinic (for patients with multi-pathologies), the TIA Clinic (in collaboration with Neurology) and the DATE Clinic.
Our Teams
Our multi-disciplinary teams include doctors, acute and community nursing teams, physiotherapists and social services, providing care when needed.
